on Monday, May 7, 2012

This weekend is the first ever, two-day Girls Got Rhythm Fest organized by Dana Raidt and Travis Ramin. It will feature women-led bands and world known lady musicians. It's very possible that you will see me there, screaming and jumping a-la American Bandstand when Ronnie Spector takes the stage. RONNIE SPECTOR. AH! So in honor of this incredibly exciting event, this week's LOUD /LOUD will feature artists from the big event--these ladies all rock so hard there is no quiet to be found! Check out the full lineup and get your tickets today. Hope to see you there!

quiet/LOUD: Minneapolis Edition

on Monday, March 19, 2012

1. Minneapolis when it's warm is the greatest place on the planet
2. Minneapolis musicians are ridiculously talented.
3. Have I mentioned how warm it's been?

quiet // Rogue Valley (Chris Koza) - The Occidental Hotel
An older one, but a great one, especially when you have California on the brain.

LOUD // Howler - Back of Your Neck
* Talented dudes / too bad that they don't respect their killer hometown and the great musicians that come from it.

Weekend Wrap up: 1/27-1/29

on Sunday, January 29, 2012

So many awesome things happened in the MiniApple this weekend I just had to share.

Friday // Mighty Swell His Sale
I have been a giant fan of the Mighty Swell shop since I crutched into their first sale with a broken foot (true story). Now that they are an "occasional shop" rather than a pop-up I have even more opportunities to see the lovely ladies and lovely wares of Mighty Swell. I took my gent to the His sale on Friday and was pretty thrilled with the result. Very much looking to the Hers sale on February 10th! In related news- I dropped my Instax (bound to happen) and the result was 1 blank white photo and 1 (actually stunning) yellow photo. I am not disappointed.

Saturday // Hair:dark red,  Nails: summer colors & The Current 7th Birthday Party
My good friend Becky (AKA Trixie) over at Moxie dyed my hair a beautiful dark cherry red (which is unfortunately difficult to catch in photos)--Call her up if you need some new color! I also did my nails in a pretty exciting, summery combo- Sally Hansen Green as Envy, Loreal Boozy Brunch and Essie Tart Deco.
and THEN I took my good friend Rachel to the Current's Birthday party for her birthday. You guys, we have amazingly talented folks here in Minnesota.

Haley Bonar- A much loved constant of the Minneapolis music scene

Sims- My favorite of all the Doomtree Crew

Polica- Exploding here in Minneapolis, and for good, good reason. Seeing those two drummers in action is positively mind blowing. Almost unbearably sultry music. Will make you want to...well...you'll see...

quiet/LOUD: 1/23/12 :: Wolf Gang

on Monday, January 23, 2012

My good friends introduced me to this band and to say that I have been obsessed would be a slight understatement. quiet/LOUD, the Wolf Gang edition.

quiet // Wolf Gang- Breaks in Paris

LOUD // Wolf Gang- Dancing with the Devil

Remembering Johnny Otis and Etta James

on Friday, January 20, 2012

Like anyone else with even a modicum of appreciation for old soul and r&b music, I was extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Etta James (you know her- she sings that song they play at EVERY wedding). I called my dad to ask if he had heard the news. His response? Yeah, her and Johnny Otis too. I probably had the same thought as most of you-- Johnny who?!
Johnny Otis is considered the "godfather of rhythm and blues" and is known to have "discovered" Etta James...and Little Richard..and Jackie Wilson... Let's remember them, shall we?

quiet/LOUD: Merry Christmas

on Saturday, December 24, 2011

I hope everyone is having a great holiday season. Many apologies for being so ethnocentric, but they just don't make as many great Hanukkah/ Winter Solstice/ Kwanzaa/ Saturnalia songs as they do Christmas songs. See you in twenty-twelve! And now, my top two favorite Christmas songs...

quiet...ish: Otis Redding // Merry Christmas Baby

LOUD: Stevie Wonder // That's What Christmas Means to Me

BONUS: This may or may not play in my parents house every year...
Lou Monte // Dominic the Italian Christmas Donkey (I'm not even joking)

quiet/LOUD: 12/19/2011

on Monday, December 19, 2011

I promise I will start posting things other than this...after the holidays

quiet: Dirty Gold // California Sunrise. It's so dreamy.

LOUD: Summer Camp // Better Off Without You. In case you are in need of a good "eff you" to your shitty ex. And when doesn't that feel good? Best line: "And if you said you're never coming back I'd be so happy, I'd be so happy, I'd laugh the whole night long"
