Angie + Reed: Vintage Barn Wedding in Afton, MN

on Wednesday, July 16, 2014

A banner hung above our heads that read "Best Night Ever". It didn't feel like one night, or a day, or a week. It felt like an entire lifetime of pure joy that fit into an 8 hour period. I know, I have to think that my own wedding was the best day of my life, but it really was the BEST. The best and perfectly imperfect.

It rained. Oh, how it rained. I panicked about it for an entire week. Friends frantically texted photos of brides in rain boots and that kissing scene from The Notebook and reassured me that it wouldn't rain. The two or so hours before the ceremony were the worst. We had to cut wedding party photos short, frantically move chairs, vintage hankies, perfectly placed signs and (then woefully ironic) sunglasses.

You know what? It was all exactly right. Our loved ones all huddled around us at just an arm's distance away in that old red barn. Some of them couldn't see I'm sure but no one complained. There was a perfectly timed downpour right outside the open barn doors we stood in front of. No one seemed to mind at all that their shoes were getting dirty. The light sprinkle for the rest of the night was a welcome addition to a very hot week. Everyone's favorite photo is the slightly blurry shot of us running into the tent smiling from ear to ear in the biggest downpour of the entire day. There's a photo of us sitting at our table right after, still with those stupid grins on our faces. They stayed there all night. Through incredible food, and loving speeches, and one hell of a dance party.

We had all the things a good "hipster wedding" should have: mason jars, paper straws, a photo booth, pies, vintage dresses, vintage hankies, craft beer.... and the things that mattered the most were the things brought there by loved ones. My family made hundreds of cookies from Nana's recipes. My dear friend Kristen from the Betty Crocker Kitchens made an incredible cake. Reed lettered all of the signs, and my best gal Monique of Ambitious Kitchen made homemade nut butters for our late night PB&J bar. We certainly had the best food of any wedding I've ever been to. The photos from Winona Grey turned out stunningly, the video from Harvest Film Co. even makes my co-workers cry. I can't believe it was all our life. Our stunning, love-filled, imperfectly perfect life.
