Weekend Wrap up: 1/27-1/29

on Sunday, January 29, 2012

So many awesome things happened in the MiniApple this weekend I just had to share.

Friday // Mighty Swell His Sale
I have been a giant fan of the Mighty Swell shop since I crutched into their first sale with a broken foot (true story). Now that they are an "occasional shop" rather than a pop-up I have even more opportunities to see the lovely ladies and lovely wares of Mighty Swell. I took my gent to the His sale on Friday and was pretty thrilled with the result. Very much looking to the Hers sale on February 10th! In related news- I dropped my Instax (bound to happen) and the result was 1 blank white photo and 1 (actually stunning) yellow photo. I am not disappointed.

Saturday // Hair:dark red,  Nails: summer colors & The Current 7th Birthday Party
My good friend Becky (AKA Trixie) over at Moxie dyed my hair a beautiful dark cherry red (which is unfortunately difficult to catch in photos)--Call her up if you need some new color! I also did my nails in a pretty exciting, summery combo- Sally Hansen Green as Envy, Loreal Boozy Brunch and Essie Tart Deco.
and THEN I took my good friend Rachel to the Current's Birthday party for her birthday. You guys, we have amazingly talented folks here in Minnesota.

Haley Bonar- A much loved constant of the Minneapolis music scene

Sims- My favorite of all the Doomtree Crew

Polica- Exploding here in Minneapolis, and for good, good reason. Seeing those two drummers in action is positively mind blowing. Almost unbearably sultry music. Will make you want to...well...you'll see...

Announcing: Film Feb Twenty-Twelve

on Tuesday, January 24, 2012

As we wrap up fatmumslim's #janphotoaday and look forward to #febphotoaday I have been reflecting on my journey as a photographer. How it all started? Probably growing up as the child of two talented artists who met in photography class. My mom is now a commercial food photographer and an inspiration to me constantly. Shooting with film reminds me of home, and of another huge inspiration, Mr. Bill Cunningham.

In honor of them, and of all that came before us, I call out to all my photographer, blogger, artist friends and not-yet-friends to complement their #febphotoaday journey with Film Feb Twenty-Twelve. I will  be shooting at least a roll/pack of film per week and posting it in our Flickr pool and I encourage you to do the same.

This February I hope you'll dust off your cameras, venture in to your local pharmacy and pick up a couple packs of 400..or 800..or 600...(oh, and Polaroids count too!)

Remembering Johnny Otis and Etta James

on Friday, January 20, 2012

Like anyone else with even a modicum of appreciation for old soul and r&b music, I was extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Etta James (you know her- she sings that song they play at EVERY wedding). I called my dad to ask if he had heard the news. His response? Yeah, her and Johnny Otis too. I probably had the same thought as most of you-- Johnny who?!
Johnny Otis is considered the "godfather of rhythm and blues" and is known to have "discovered" Etta James...and Little Richard..and Jackie Wilson... Let's remember them, shall we?

A little love

on Thursday, January 19, 2012

My dear, dear friend Summer has started selling cute little prints that she makes with her gent--no surprise that some of their favorite song lyrics are also some of mine! Never a bad time to show your loved ones how you feel with one of these. Check out their shop, ourlittlewords.

Staying cute, when it's oh, so cold.

I woke up to a crisp -35 windchill today. Minnesota. I tell ya. I suppose I shouldn't complain- we have had a ridiculously easy winter so far. It's hard to care much about how you look when your eyeballs hurt but sometimes its the little things that can brighten your very chill day...

one. Covertible Mittens in Charcoal Gray $30.00 (so you can stay warm AND text)
two. Asos Ribbed Knee Socks $8.95 (layer over tights!)
four. Minted Rose Lip Balm $7.00 (originally bought for the packaging/ works SO well)
five. Diagonal Alley Coat $139.99
six. Summer Light iPhone case $47.95 (when all else fails- delusions! Pretend you are laying in field with a warm breeze blowing over you.)
seven. Bamboo Jersey Tights $22.00 (bamboo=warm and soft)

All that being said...when the windchill is -35, cute should not be your main priority. On those days:
Columbia Uptown Voyager Jacket. That omniheat stuff is the jam.

Taking the Leap with Tangerine Tango

on Sunday, January 15, 2012

It has taken me a while to warm up (no pun intended) to Pantone's color of twenty-twelve, but I think it is finally time for me to take the leap. Tangerine Tango, I accept you into my life and into my wardrobe. What shall I pick first?

On My Mind: Japanese Street Style

on Thursday, January 12, 2012

After I posted that ridiculous bunny video I realized that if I lived in Japan I would SO be one of those stuffed animal toting, rainbow makeup wearing, practically unreal looking street style girls. I just cant resist it all.

But perhaps, some more realistic inspirations from some of my favorite Japanese street-style blogs...

Bunny Love: YouTube Videos

on Monday, January 9, 2012

Soooo cute animal videos, am I right? Like this one, and this one, and don't forget this one. Bunny time!

Remember this one?! (turn off the sound, it's annoying)

Makes me wish I had a bunny...and some snow to throw it in. Similarly, a bathtub would be good.

Starting Twenty-Twelve Off Right

on Tuesday, January 3, 2012

So how was everyone's New Years Eve? Mine was absolutely lovely! I am generally pretty anti-New Years Resolutions because, really, why wait for one specific day a year to make a positive change in your life? That is silly. Regardless, a fresh start is an awfully nice idea. On my list of twenty-twelve musts...

1.Plan. I generally have absolutely no problem doing this. 2012 planner by Miss Meg Shop.

2. Floss. Flossing has been my unofficial, unsuccessful resolution for about 4 years now. Is this the year? Well..maybe...

3. Take more pictures. I bought this little guy in hopes of doing just that. Fuji Instax Mini 50s.

4. Sleep more. And subsequently, watch less TV.

5. Be good to yourself. And everyone else. No Whining by Hammerpress.
